Jobs

Follow the work clusters do for your team, frame by frame, and remove or retry it.

Everything a cluster does for your team runs as jobs: processing an uploaded trajectory, rendering its preview, computing an analysis, uploading results. Each job covers one piece of work, usually one frame. The jobs view lets you follow them as they run, see which frames failed and why, and stop or retry them.

Jobs are team-wide: every member sees the jobs of every trajectory in the selected team, whoever started them. The list updates live.

Where to find them

  • Compute jobs in the dashboard header: the ring fills as jobs complete, and the label reads Jobs, 2 running or 5 queued. Click it to open the popover.
  • Compute jobs in a trajectory card's menu opens a panel at the right of the dashboard with that trajectory's jobs only.

The popover shows:

  • The counts: Queued, Running, Done and Failed.
  • The jobs of all trajectories, grouped as described below.
  • Clusters: the team's clusters' average CPU, Memory, Disk and Network, from those reporting live metrics. CPU turns red at 85 %.
  • 3 / 5 online, the team members online, linking to My Team.
  • Open clusters, to the clusters page.

When VOLT runs in your browser tab or in the desktop app, Clusters and Open clusters don't appear. On single-user deployments the online count doesn't appear.

How jobs are grouped

Jobs are listed in three levels, most recent trajectory first:

LevelShows
TrajectoryIts name, 12/20 jobs completed and when the last job changed. Click to expand.
FrameFrame followed by the timestep, General for jobs not tied to a frame, or Storage Transfer / Storage Transfers
JobIts name, how long ago it changed, how long it took once completed, and its error if it failed

Groups that contain storage transfers open by themselves.

The color of a name tells its state: amber while queued, blue while running, green once completed, red if it failed. A trajectory or frame whose jobs are partly done and partly failed keeps a neutral color. A trajectory that has just finished all its jobs briefly glows green.

Job types

JobStarted byWhat it does
Preprocess trajectory frameAn uploadStores the frame and builds its 3D model. See Processing.
Rasterize trajectory previewAn uploadRenders the preview image of the trajectory card
The plugin's name, such as Polyhedral Template MatchingA pipeline runComputes that analysis on that frame
Artifact UploadAn analysisStores an analysis's 3D results
Trajectory Transfer, Analysis Transfer, Storage TransferThe clustersMoves stored data from one cluster to another

A pipeline run with several analyses shows one job per analysis under each frame: the cluster runs all the stages of a frame in one go, in order.

Statuses

StatusCounted asMeaning
queuedQueuedWaiting in the cluster's queue for a free worker
retryingQueuedQueued again after a retry
runningRunningA worker is on it
completedDoneFinished
failedFailedFailed for good. The error is shown under the job's name.

Jobs run on the cluster that holds the work: trajectory processing on the cluster that stores the trajectory, analyses on the cluster the pipeline ran on. A job waits in Queued until a worker of that cluster picks it up, so a busy cluster shows long queues while an idle one starts jobs at once. A trajectory frame job gets up to three attempts before it is marked failed.

A job stays in the list for 24 hours after its last change, then drops out.

Actions

Right-click a trajectory's group for:

ActionWhat it does
Remove Running JobsStops the trajectory's queued, running and retrying jobs on their clusters and removes them from the list
Retry Failed JobsQueues every failed job of the trajectory again

Toasts report the outcome: Removed 4 job(s), Queued 2 failed job(s) for retry, or No queued or running jobs found / No failed jobs found to retry. If a cluster doesn't confirm, the toast says so.

A failed analysis job also has its own Retry button, which retries the failed frames of that analysis. The analysis listing offers the same as Retry Failed Frames.

Removing jobs doesn't delete what they already produced. To delete results, delete the analysis; see Deleting results.

Completion notices

While a trajectory's jobs panel is open, a toast appears when its work finishes: Analysis completed successfully!, Rasterization completed successfully, or Jobs completed successfully, and the same with "with errors" when some jobs failed.
