VOLT

Desktop app

Install VOLT as an app that runs the whole stack in its own window, with no Docker, database or server to set up.

The desktop app is VOLT's web client in a window of its own, running the same in-browser stack a browser tab runs: the server and a cluster daemon compiled to WebAssembly, in workers of the window. There's no Docker, no database to install and no server to reach. The window is its own backend, and its storage belongs to the app, so the browser can't clear your workspace.

Use it to work alone on your own computer. For a group, several machines or native plugin builds, self-host a server.

Download

Installers for each release are on the VOLT releases page:

PlatformFileInstall
Windows (x64)VOLT.Desktop.<version>.exeRun it. It installs for your user without asking for a folder, adds Volt to the Start menu and the desktop, and opens the app.
macOS (Apple silicon)Volt-<version>-arm64.dmgOpen the disk image and drag Volt to Applications.
Linux (x86-64)Volt-<version>.AppImageMake it executable (chmod +x Volt-<version>.AppImage) and run it.
Debian, Ubuntu (x86-64)volt-desktop_<version>_amd64.debsudo apt install ./volt-desktop_<version>_amd64.deb

The installers aren't code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper may warn you the first time you open the app.

First launch

The window shows Starting VOLT with the same phases as a browser tab: Start API server, Provision workspace and Start compute daemon. The first launch creates the local account, a team and a cluster, and opens the dashboard signed in. A default set of analysis plugins then installs from the plugin registry in the background; any that fail are tried again at the next launch.

If startup fails, Show log has the stack's output and Try again restarts it.

How it differs from a browser tab

  • Storage is the app's. The workspace persists in the app's data folder, where no browser can evict it.
  • One window. Only one instance runs. Opening the app again brings the existing window to the front.
  • It keeps running in the background. A minimized or hidden window isn't throttled, so analyses keep going. Closing the window stops VOLT, along with anything running.
  • Links open outside. Links to other sites open in your default browser; the window only shows VOLT.
  • No server to choose. The app always runs its own workspace and can't connect to a server. To work on a server, open its address in a browser.

Everything else works as in a browser tab, with the same limits: one local user, no other machines to enroll, plugins only with a wasm-wasm32 build, and Python under Pyodide. See Run in the browser.

Where data lives

The app keeps its data in its folder under your user's application data:

PlatformFolder
Windows%APPDATA%\Volt
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Volt
Linux~/.config/Volt

In it:

  • Partitions/volt/ is the window's storage, which holds the whole workspace: the local account, trajectories, analysis results, installed plugins and notebook environments.
  • app-config.json remembers the window's size and position.

To start over with an empty workspace, quit the app and delete Partitions/volt/. Uninstalling the app on Windows leaves this folder in place.

Updates

The app bundles the stack it runs, so updating the app updates VOLT.

InstallHow it updates
WindowsAutomatically. Shortly after launch the app checks the latest release, downloads it in the background and installs it when you quit.
Linux AppImageAutomatically, as on Windows.
macOSDownload the new .dmg from the releases page and replace the app.
Linux .debDownload the new package and install it over the old one.
